NYCxDESIGN returns to New York City this month in a massive celebration of the myriad designs that help to embellish the cultural richness and innovation of the metropolis. “NYCxDESIGN is New York City’s official citywide celebration of design,” the program explains. “NYCxDESIGN creates a collaborative platform for cultural and commercial opportunities, elevates established and emerging design practices and increases awareness of and appreciation for design by all audience,” of the breadth of the ongoing event.
In honor of the incredible design event, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is launching a new collection of products from contemporary designers in partnership with Kickstarter. Reportedly, MoMA will be retailing 24 innovative designs created by 20 designers from all over the world. On May 19th, as party of NYCxDESIGN, the MoMA Design Store will host a party to celebrate its collaboration with Kickstarter, where visitors can see all of the products from the special line and even meet the designers who created them.
MoMA, with more innovative growth being spearheaded by the museum’s President Marie-Josee Kravis (formerly Marie-Josee Drouin), and Emmanuel Platt, the Director of Merchandising, it’s no wonder that the art institution is going down such a modern, design-focused path. Says Platt of the collaboration with Kickstarter, “We were inspired to pursue this project because so many of the most impressive, new and innovative products we have been finding lately kept leading us back to Kickstarter.” He continues, “It became clear that Kickstarter is an important new way for Good Design to come into being, and we wanted to celebrate that.”
The impressive collaboration will feature items such as a “Projecto Slide Projector,” a tiny projector that uses wheels of 35mm slide film to show off Instagram pictures, beautiful artisan bike straps and carpenter watches, and a 3-D bulb lamp made from laser engraved acrylic sheet. All of these items are very much in line with the kinds of innovations that NYCxDESIGN, Kickstarter, and MoMA are proud to showcase and celebrate.
Every year, NYCxDESIGN brings together design, culture, education, entertainment and other disciplines in a sprawling program that features exhibitions, installations, trade shows, talks, open studios, and launches of collaborative design projects, like the one between MoMA and Kickstarter.
